China’s long and illustrious history has seen many changes. This coupled with natural boundaries that make it the 4th largest nation by landmass and the largest by population has given rise to a varied and multi-faceted culture. Although China is now pushing for complete modernization, there still exist many roots to ancient customs and behavior in Chinese society, often unfathomable to the outside observer. Therefore, it is unrealistic to expect that a foreign visitor coming to China could immediately understand, much less adjust to, these customs. If you have recently arrived (and even for those who have been here a while) the transition into Chinese life is not always smooth. In order to help you understand more about China and its people, culture and customs, "Global Chinese” offers acculturation courses so that you can integrate into Chinese people’s lives and improve your quality of life in China.


Chinese Culture & Customs
China has many festivals and customs well preserved over thousands of years of history. With 56 recognized ethnic groups, each has different languages and customs. Learning about the literature, festivals and arts of ethnic groups is essential and interesting to have a full understanding of the Chinese culture. This course will take you into a fantastic China you have never known.


Chinese History
The Xia-Shang-Zhou Chronology Project, a five-year project supported by the Chinese government, released the chronology of the early dynasties in 2000, which was rather ambiguous before. The researchers not only used many historical documents, but also used various modern scientific methods in the project.

Chinese Kung Fu
The Chinese word for Kung Fu is Wu Shu, which encompasses all styles of Chinese Kung Fu, including Shaolin fist, Nan quan, Bagua, Xingyi quan, Nunchakus, three-section cudgel, etc. This course will help you appreciate the King Fu culture.


Chinese Taichi
Taichi is one of the internal styles of Chinese martial arts. Taichi originally means the two opposite yet complementary forces, Yin and Yang. Taichi is based on the principle that softness overcomes hardness. Behind Taichi's soft, graceful and growing movements lies its hidden strength and great physical and mental control. Taichi provides a unique method of self-defense and contributes to health, fitness and longevity. So why not join us and enjoy the charm of Taichi?


Chinese Calligraphy
Chinese calligraphy (Brush calligraphy) is an art unique to Asian cultures--an art conveys the moral integrity, character, emotions, aesthetic feelings and culture. Calligraphy is not only a practical technique for writing Chinese characters, but also a unique Oriental art of expression and a branch of learning or discipline as well which has formed an important part of Chinese culture. It involves four treasures of the Study: the ink brush, ink, paper, and ink stone. In addition to these four tools, desk pads and paperweights are also used. In our calligraphy lessons, even though you may have no knowledge about Chinese or Chinese characters, our calligraphy instructor is able to lead you and let you experience the beauty of Chinese Calligraphy.


Chinese Painting
Chinese painting, the flower of Chinese culture, is distinguished by a spirit and an atmosphere of its own. It is entirely different from Western painting. That difference is hard to grasp and express. It has a certain tone and atmosphere, visible in Western painting, but essentially different and achieved by different means. Chinese painting developed and was classified by theme into six genres: Figure painting, Landscape painting, Flower and bird painting, Court painting, Literati painting and Dan Qing.


Chinese Operas
Currently Chinese operas continue to exist in 368 different forms, like Hebei bangzi (Hebei), Henan opera (Henan), Pingju (Hebei), Qinqiang/Qin dynasty opera (Shaanxi), Huju (Shanghai), Kunqu, etc. The best known being Beijing opera, which assumed its present form in the mid-19th century and was extremely popular in the latter part of the Qing Dynasty. The traditional repertoire of Beijing opera includes more than 1,000 works, mostly taken from historical novels about political and military struggles. In the early years of the People''s Republic of China, the development of Beijing opera was encouraged; many new operas on historical and modern themes were written, and earlier operas continue to be performed.


Chinese Medicine and Traditional Health Care
Traditional Chinese Medicine ("TCM") is an integral part of Chinese culture. TCM is defined as a medical science governing the theory and practice of traditional Chinese medicine. Chinese Traditional Music
Chinese musical instruments have been classified according to the materials used in their construction, namely, metal, stone, silk, bamboo, gourd, clay, skin and wood. The older instruments include koto, long zithers, flutes, panpipes, the sheng, or mouth organ and percussion instruments, such as Er-hu,clappers, drums and gongs. Of later origin are various lutes and fiddles introduced to China from Central Asia. The famous Chinese ancient folks music includes The "Moon Mirrored In Erquan", "Blossoms on a Spring Moonlit Night" and "Three Variations on Plum Blossom".


Chinese Food and Cooking
Chinese cuisine is world-renowned, rich in taste and tradition. Varieties include Sichuanese , Cantonese, Shanghainese dishes, Hunanese, etc. just to name a few. Our professional teachers will guide you carefully to create wonderful Chinese dishes, while you just need to bring your appetite and desire to learn. You can learn how to make dumplings, Wonton, Shanghai Steamed Dumpling, Noodles, Soup and taste your own handiworks!


Chinese Tea
Chinese tea has a long history. China is the source of tea. Tea is the Chinese national drink. Chinese tea has enjoyed a reputation for fragrance and health promoting functions for more than 4000 years. Tea was used as an offering in the West Zhou, as a vegetable in the spring and Autumn Period and as medicine in the Warring period. Later in the West Han Dynasty, it became a major commodity. Tasting tea and treating guests are Chinese individual elegant entertainment and social activities and spending time in a teahouse and tea party is a Chinese social tradition. The course is designed to introduce the various types of Chinese tea, the use of the tea set, implements and proper storage of tea leaves. The student will learn various methods to make green tea, oolong tea, red tea and Pu er tea, as well as traditional tea culture. 


Chinese Entertaining Games
 
Mahjong Mahjong
One of the Chinese cultural heritages with an origin in 4,000 years ago, is now popularly played across the country by people of different backgrounds. Depending on the game rules, people usually play Mah Jong in a group of 4. The purpose of Mahjong is relaxing, killing time or socializing. By taking the Mahjong course, students will get a general idea of what Mahjong is and what the game rules are and why Chinese are so interested in playing it, and it will also give you a better understanding of daily life of Chinese people as well.
